Notes on the performance

In June and July, La Scala will be a land of elves, fairies, butterflies, skirmishes and spells, losses and reconciliations: Titania and Oberon, the lovers, Puck, Bottom… the magic of a fairy tale night straight from the mind of Shakespeare and the geometric perfection of George Balanchine’s style. His A Midsummer Night’s Dream and the Scala Ballet Company share an unbreakable international destiny: with this ballet, created in New York in 1962, the company really did tour the world, and thanks to the interpretation and La Scala’s staging in 2003 with scenery and costumes by Luisa Spinatelli, Balanchine’s “Dream” is back, more splendid than ever: it is not a restoration – this has been said – rather, it is almost a renaissance. Today, having made its first appearance thanks to the Scala Ballet Company in Mexico, Brazil, China, Germany, Turkey, Cyprus, Greece, Russia and Denmark, finally returns to La Scala with Mendelssohn’s music conducted by David Coleman.
